The Birth of the Church
  • Luke  &  Acts
2
Resurrection Sunday
  • On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
  • They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
  • but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
3
Two angels told them:
“He has risen!”
  • While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
  • In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
  • He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
4
The women told the disciples
  • But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
  • Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
5
On the Road to Emmaus that day…
  • They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
  • As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
  • but they were kept from recognizing him.
6
Later that day, in the upper room…
  • Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
  • While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
  • They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
7
But it wasn’t a Ghost
  • He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
  • Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."
  • When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
  • And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
8
He opened their minds….
  • Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
  • He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
  • and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
  • You are witnesses of these things.
9
He told them to stay in Jerusalem until they were clothed with power
  • I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.“

10
Acts picks up where Luke leaves off..
  • On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.
  • For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
  • But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
11
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
  • Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
  • They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
  • All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
  • Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
12
Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there.

  • When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said.
  • With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed.
  • So there was great joy in that city.
13
When Samaria accepted the word of God, Peter and John were sent to confirm it
  • When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit,

  • because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

  • Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
14
Peter had the keys of the Kingdom
  • And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
  • I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
15
Peter opens the door to the Gentiles
  • He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.
  • Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism
  • but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.
16
The Gentiles received the Spirit too!
  • While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
  • The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
  • For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,
  • "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have."
17
Peter tells the apostles what happened in Caesarea
  • "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.
  • Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
  • So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?"
  • When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life."
18
Paul chosen to take the Gospel to the Gentiles.
  • But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel.
  • I will show him how much he must suffer for my name."
  • Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."
  • Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,
19
Paul found some disciples when he was in Ephesus
  • and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
  • So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied.
20
John’s baptism is not enough…
  • Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus."
  • On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
  • When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
21
The Great Commission
  • Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
22
The Disciples couldn’t do it alone, so Jesus said “Take the Holy Spirit”
  • Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."
  • And with that he breathed on them and said, “Take the Holy Spirit.
  • If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
